GETTING CREATINGLY CRAFTY WITH COMMON EVERYDAY THINGS

I have been trying to think what I might be able to share with my friends here on WordPress, since I don’t go on vacations, don’t have a camera to take pictures and pretty much don’t go out at all.

Then it hit me, there are a few things I might be able to share, like favorite recipes that my mother used to make for myself and my siblings when we were growing up, little tips that she and my grandmother passed down, little creative things that parents who don’t have a whole lot of extra money can do with their kids or that the kids can do themselves, things like that.

So that is what I will do, I will share my somewhat limited knowledge of things that might help others who don’t have a whole lot of money to work with.

I think that I will simply add to them as I think of or remember more, so any who read this post and might be interested, you might want to bookmark the link and check back from time to time to see if I have updated it.

So, now, where to begin? I think I will start with…

1: YOU CAN CLEAN COPPER BOTTOM PANS USING SALT AND LEMON JUICE, THEN RINSE WELL.

2: IF YOU HAVE A RECIPE THAT CALLS FOR BUTTERMILK AND YOU DON’T HAVE ANY, PUT ABOUT A HALF A TEASPOON OF WHITE VINEGAR IN ONE CUP OF SWEET MILK AND THEN LET IT SIT FOR ABOUT FIVE MINUTES. THE VINEGAR WILL NOT AFFECT THE FLAVOR OF THE RECIPE, EVEN IN CAKES.

3: IF YOU HAVE A RECIPE THAT CALLS FOR POWDERED SUGAR AND YOU DON’T HAVE ANY, SIMPLY PUT SOME REGULAR SUGAR THROUGH A FOOD PROCESSOR SET ON HIGH UNTIL IT TURNS TO A POWDERED CONSISTENCY.

4: IF YOU HAVE A RECIPE THAT CALLS FOR BROWN SUGAR, BUT YOU DON’T HAVE ANY, SIMPLY LIGHTLY MIX ABOUT ONE TABLESPOON OF MOLASSES WITH ABOUT A CUP OF SUGAR IN A BLENDER SET ON LOW, THEN USE AS PER THE RECIPE.

5: GOT A FUSSY BABY THAT WON’T DRINK WATER? TRY PUTTING A TINY BIT OF COOKING FLAVORING IN THE WATER, ALONG WITH JUST A TOUCH OF SUGAR OR HONEY.

6: DON’T THROW AWAY PENCIL SHAVINGS, SAVE THEM IN A CONTAINER AND USE AS STARTER FOR THE BAR-B-Q OR WHEN YOU GO CAMPING.

7: DON’T THROW AWAY FRAYED SHOELACES, SAVE THEM, THEY CAN BE USED TO TIE GROWING SAPLINGS OR PLANTS IN YOUR GARDEN TO THE STAKES OR TRELLISES, TO TIE BUNDLES OF PAPERS TOGETHER FOR CONSERVATION PROJECTS, AND A MULTITUDE OF OTHER THINGS.

8: FOR THOSE THAT CROCHET OR KNIT AND SOMETIMES MAKE HOUSE SLIPPERS, IF YOU HAVE OLD PAIRS OF CLOTH SNEAKERS OR EVEN STORE BOUGHT SLIPPERS THAT HAVE SEEN BETTER DAYS BUT THE SOLES ARE STILL GOOD, SIMPLY REMOVE THE FABRIC AND THEN EITHER HOT GLUE OR HAND STITCH THE CROCHETED OR KNITTED SLIPPERS TO THE SOLES, IT WORKS LIKE A CHARM AND MAKES THOSE PRECIOUS HAND MADE ITEMS LAST A LOT LONGER. [ALSO, IF YOU SEW BINDING TAPE AROUND THE END OF A CROCHETED SHAWL, BLANKET OR THROW, IT WILL HELP TO PRESERVE THE ITEM AND WILL KEEP CURIOUS FINGERS FROM PULLING THE THREADS IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN.}

9A: MADE A CAKE AND HAVE LEFTOVER ICING? DON’T THROW IT AWAY! IF YOU HAVE GRAHAM CRACKERS IN THE HOUSE, SIMPLY USE THE LEFT OVER FROSTING TO MAKE LITTLE GRAHAM CRACKER SANDWICHES FOR TREATS TO GIVE THE KIDS, OR EVEN FOR THE KID IN YOU!

9B: YOU CAN ALSO PLACE THE LEFT OVER FROSTING IN CANDY MOLDS, PRESS A BIRTHDAY CANDLE INTO IT FAR ENOUGH FOR THE CANDLE TO STAND INDEPENDENTLY, THEN, AFTER REMOVING THE CANDLE, CAREFULLY PLACE THE MOLDS IN A SEALED CONTAINER IN THE FRIDGE UNTIL THEY SOLIDIFY.

CAREFULLY REMOVED THE NOW SOLID FROSTING FROM THE MOLDS AND PLACE IN SEALED CONTAINER IN FREEZER FOR USE AS EDIBLE BIRTHDAY CANDLE HOLDERS JUST WAITING FOR YOUR NEXT BIRTHDAY CAKE ADVENTURE TO COME OUT AND SHOW OFF YOUR CREATIVITY.

10: WANT TO DUST COOKIES, CAKES OR OTHER SWEET TREATS WITH COLORED SUGAR BUT DON’T HAVE ANY? TRY TAKING A SMALL ZIPLOC BAG, PLACE ABOUT ONE HALF CUP OF SUGAR IN IT, THEN ADD A DROP OR TWO OF FOOD COLORING IN WHATEVER COLOR YOU NEED INTO THE BAG, CLOSE IT WITH JUST A TINY BIT OF AIR IN THE BAG, THEN SHAKE AND ROLL THE SUGAR AROUND TILL IT IS EVENLY COATED. VOILA, CUSTOM MADE COLORED SUGAR! YOU CAN EVEN ADD A TINY BIT OF FLAVORING IF YOU WISH!

11: FOR A BREAKFAST TREAT FOR THE KIDS, MAKE THEM “RAINBOW CAKES” FOR BREAKFAST! SIMPLY MAKE YOUR PANCAKE BATTER AS USUAL, THEN DIVIDE IT INTO ABOUT FOUR SEPARATE CONTAINERS AND ADD A FEW DROPS OF FOOD COLORING TO EACH BATCH, WITH A CORRESPONDING FRUIT FLAVOR. WHEN THE PANCAKES ARE COOKED, THE KIDS WILL NOT KNOW WHAT COLOR OR FLAVOR THEY ARE GETTING TILL THEY BITE INTO THEM! (THIS USED TO BE A RITUAL BREAKFAST EVERY EASTER WHEN I WAS YOUNG.)

12: YOUR KID’S GETTING FUSSY ABOUT THE SAME OLD OATMEAL? TRY USING APPLE JUICE INSTEAD OF WATER TO MAKE IT! SIMPLY ADD A LITTLE BUTTER, BROWN SUGAR AND CINNAMON AND IT IS LIKE AN APPLE CRISP.

13: FOR SOME UNUSUAL SHAPED CUP  CAKES, IF YOU HAVE OPEN ENDED METAL COOKIE CUTTERS IN VARIOUS SHAPES, SIMPLY SPRAY THEM WITH COOKING SPRAY AND SET THEM CUTTING EDGE DOWN ONTO A FLAT COOKIE SHEET, THEN FILL THEM ABOUT HALF WAY WITH CAKE BATTER. WHEN THE CAKES ARE DONE, SIMPLY RUN A TOOTHPICK OR SMALL PARING KNIFE ALONG THE EDGES TO RELEASE THE CAKES,  THEN FROST AS NORMAL. WORKS FOR MINI-BREAD LOAVES AS WELL.

14: GOTTEN STUNG BY A BEE? TAKE A Q-TIP, DIP IT IN A LITTLE BIT OF HOUSEHOLD BLEACH, ROLL THE Q-TIP A LITTLE TO SQUEEZE THE EXCESS OUT, THEN PUT IT RIGHT ON TOP OF THE STING, BUT BE CAREFUL NOT TO GET IT ON THE SURROUND SKIN. FOR SOME ODD REASON THE BLEACH DEACTIVATES THE POISON SOMEHOW AND KEEPS THE STING FROM SWELLING. I AM HIGHLY ALLERGIC TO BEE VENOM AND A COUNTRY DOCTOR TOLD MY MOTHER TO DO THIS WITH ME. IT KEPT ME OUT OF THE HOSPITAL ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION.

15: RAISE A GARDEN OR HAVE SCADS OF HOUSEPLANTS? SAVE YOUR COFFEE GROUNDS, EGG SHELLS, TEA BAGS, AND VEGETABLE PARINGS AND PUT THEM IN A SMALL TUB, ALONG WITH SOME VERY FINE FISH TANK GRAVEL, POTTING SOIL AND A COUPLE OF TUBS OF EARTHWORMS, THEN JUST WALK AWAY AND FORGET IT. TURN IT ABOUT TWICE A WEEK AND YOU WILL HAVE SOME OF THE BEST POTTING SOIL IN THE WORLD! (MY MOM’S “SECRET” FORMULA!) AND IF YOU HAVE A FISH TANK, DON’T THROW THE WATER AWAY! PLANTS LOVE IT!

16: MADE PANCAKES OR WAFFLES ONLY TO REALIZE THAT YOU HAD LITTLE OR NO SYRUP? DON’T DESPAIR, SIMPLY TAKE SOME FRUIT JUICE, LIKE APPLE OR ORANGE OR PINEAPPLE, AND HEAT IT ENOUGH TO ADD SOME CORNSTARCH AS A THICKENER AND JUST A LITTLE BIT OF SUGAR, COOK TILL CLEAR, THEN POUR OVER YOUR PANCAKES OR WAFFLES!

17: HOMEMADE SYRUP…ONE CUP OF WHITE SUGAR…ONE CUP OF BROWN SUGAR…ONE CUP OF LIGHT CORN SYRUP…ONE CUP OF WATER…PLACE ALL IN PAN AND LET COME TO ROLLING BOIL, STIRRING CONSTANTLY, THEN TURN DOWN AND LET SIMMER FOR ABOUT FIVE MINUTES. REMOVE FROM HEAT, ADD FLAVORING SUCH AS VANILLA OR MAPLE, THEN LET COOL AND PLACE IN JAR OR OLD SYRUP BOTTLE. KEEP REFRIGERATED. MAKES ABOUT THREE CUPS.

18: FOAM EGG CARTONS MAKE GREAT SEEDLING STARTERS. SIMPLY FILL LITTLE CUPS ABOUT THREE QUARTERS OF THE WAY WITH SOIL, ADD SEED, THEN WET LIGHTLY AND CLOSE THE LID. SET ON WINDOW LEDGE WHERE CARTON CAN GET WARMED AND IT ACTS LIKE A MINIATURE GREEN HOUSE.

19: HOME MADE BATH SALTS…TAKE ABOUT TWO CUPS OF EPSON SALTS AND ABOUT ONE HALF OF A STANDARD EYEDROPPER OF YOUR FAVORITE PERFUME, AND COMBINE THEM IN A LARGE GLASS JAR WITH A TIGHT LID FOR ABOUT THREE DAYS TO A WEEK. THEN USE A BLENDER TO CRUSH THE ROCK SALT. ADD TO WARM BATH WATER ABOUT FIVE MINUTES BEFORE GETTING IN. SMELLS GOOD AND THE EPSON SALTS ARE GOOD FOR SORE MUSCLES! [YOU CAN ALSO PLACE SOME OF THE SCENTED SALTS IN SMALL CLOTH SACHETS AND PUT THEM IN DRESSER DRAWERS OR HANG THEM FROM A RIBBON IN YOUR CLOSET.Y

20: IF YOU PUT A LITTLE UNCOOKED RICE IN SALT AND A REGULAR SODA CRACKER IN SUGAR, IT WILL KEEP THEM FROM DRAWING MOISTURE.

21: YOU CAN USE CLEAR NAIL POLISH TO STOP A PANTYHOSE RUN. SIMPLY PUT A TINY BIT OF THE POLISH ON THE START AND END OF THE RUN, LET DRY, THEN CAREFULLY PULL AWAY FROM SKIN.

22: TAKE A BOX OF PANTY SHIELDS AND THE OLD FASHIONED KOTEX WITH THE LITTLE TIES ON THEM WITH YOU WHEN YOU GO CAMPING…THEY MAKE EXCELLENT, EXTREMELY STERILE BANDAGES, AS LONG AS THEY ARE KEPT IN A TIGHT CONTAINER OR ZIPLOC.

23: DON’T DISCARD OLD SOCKS THAT HAVE SEEN BETTER DAYS TILL YOU CUT AWAY THE TOPS. THOSE TOPS MAKE EXCELLENT ARM AND ANKLE WARMERS, NOT TO MENTION COMING IN HANDY TO HOLD BANDAGES IN PLACE, SUCH AS THE ONES MENTIONED IN #22.

24: PANTYHOSE, MINUS THE FEET, CAN ALSO MAKE GOOD BANDAGE HOLDERS, AS WELL AS COMING IN HANDY DURING THE WINTER AS LEG WARMERS ONCE THE FEET ARE REMOVED. THIS IS A GOOD USE FOR PAIRS WITH RUNS IN THEM AND WILL EXTEND THE USE YOU GET OUT OF THEM.

25: IF YOU LIVE IN AN AREA OF THE WORLD OR COUNTRY THAT IS PRONE TO ELECTRICAL STORMS OR OTHER EVENTS THAT COULD CAUSE A POWER OUTAGE, A SAFE WAY TO CREATE NON-TIP, FLAME PROOF CANDLE HOLDERS IS TO TAKE SMALL CHEAP METAL ASHTRAYS, FILL THEM WITH JUST ENOUGH PLAY SAND TO HOLD THE CANDLE SECURELY, THEN SET THE CANDLE DOWN INTO THE SAND. [IF YOU MOISTEN THE SAND A LITTLE, IT WILL NOT ONLY ADD WEIGHT, IT WILL HELP TO PREVENT THE LOOSE SAND FROM SHIFTING AND LOOSENING ITS HOLD ON THE CANDLE.]

26: ALSO, IF YOU WILL CUT LARGER OR LONGER TAPERED CANDLES IN HALF, IT WILL NOT ONLY GIVE YOU MORE LIGHT SOURCES, IT WILL REDUCE THE CHANCE OF THE CANDLE TIPPING OVER IF JOSTLED OR BUMPED.

27: IF YOU HAVE EVER RECEIVED, OR PURCHASED, THOSE LITTLE NOVELTY CANDLES IN THE JARS WITH THE STOPPER TYPE LIDS, DON’T THROW THAT CONTAINER AWAY ONCE THE CANDLE IS GONE.

INSTEAD, TAKE AN OLD LARGE CANNER, [YOU CAN PICK UP OLD CANNERS OR POTS AT ANY GOODWILL TYPE STORE FOR NEXT TO NOTHING].

PLACE THE FORMER CANDLE HOLDER IN THE BOTTOM, BEING SURE TO SET IT ON A METAL LID THAT HAS HAD A FEW HOLES DRILLED OR PUNCHED IN IT, OR A SMALL STEAMER RACK, COVER COMPLETELY WITH WATER AND SET TO BOIL. THE MELTED WAX WILL RISE TO THE TOP OF THE WATER, LEAVING THE CANDLE CONTAINER WAX FREE.

LET WATER COOL AND WAX SOLIDIFY, THEN USE A KNIFE TO CAREFULLY BREAK UP THE WAX, BUT DON’T THROW IT AWAY, FOR IT CAN BE REMELTED TO MAKE MORE CANDLES.

REMOVE CANDLE HOLDERS FROM WATER, DUMP, THEN REPLACE CANDLE HOLDERS IN THE COOKER ONCE MORE, ADD MORE WATER AND A FEW TABLESPOONS OF COMMON HOUSEHOLD BLEACH AS A STERILIZING AGENT.

LET COME TO ROLLING BOIL, THEN TURN DOWN AND LET BOIL FOR ABOUT THIRTY MINUTES.

SET OUT, UPSIDE DOWN, ON CLEAN TOWEL TO DRAIN. THEY CONTAINERS, ONCE DRY, CAN NOW BE USED FOR A MULTITUDE OF OTHER THINGS, INCLUDING THE BATH SALTS MENTIONED IN #19.

28: DON’T THROW AWAY ALL OF THOSE BITS AND PIECES OF OLD CRAYON, INSTEAD CHOP THEM UP, AND PLACE THEM INTO AN OLD, NON-FOOD PURPOSE RUBBER CANDY MOLD AND MELT IN MICROWAVE JUST UNTIL WAX MELTS ENOUGH TO BOND TOGETHER, BUT STILL RETAINS COLOR SEPARATION.

ANOTHER THING WOULD BE TO MELT INDIVIDUAL COLORS, THEN POUR THEM IN A RANDOM PATTERN ONTO WAX PAPER THAT IS LAID INTO A FLAT COOKIE SHEET WITH SIDES ON IT. KEEP ADDING THE COLORS UNTIL THE ENTIRE COOKIE SHEET IS COVERED IN ABOUT A ONE QUARTER TO ONE HALF IN LAYER, THEN LET SOLIDIFY AND CUT INTO BLOCKS. THE KIDS NOW HAVE SOME “RAINBOW” CRAYONS TO EXPLORE THEIR CREATIVITY WITH.

29: DO YOU HAVE YOUNG ONES WHO MIGHT PERHAPS HAVE A T-SHIRT WITH A FAVORITE DESIGN THAT THEY WEAR CONSTANTLY? WELL, ONCE THE ITEM HAS “SEEN BETTER DAYS”, AS LONG AS NOTHING IS WRONG WITH THE DESIGN ITSELF, CAREFULLY CUT AROUND IT AND THEN DECOUPAGE IT TO AN INEXPENSIVE CANVAS THAT HAS BEEN SPRAY PAINTED WITH A COLOR THAT WILL ACT AS A GOOD BACKGROUND, FRAME THE ITEM AND THEN PRESENT IT TO YOUR CHILD AND WATCH THEIR EYES LIGHT UP WHEN THEY REALIZE THAT THEY HAVEN’T LOST THEIR FAVORITE DESIGN AFTER ALL.

30: IF YOU DO MUCH HAND MENDING, SUCH AS SEWING ON BUTTONS AND SUCH, SAVE THE WAX MENTIONED IN #27, MELT THEM INTO A SOLID BLOCK, THEN CUT THAT INTO SMALLER PIECES AND KEEP ONE OR TWO IN YOUR SEWING KIT.

WHEN YOU GET READY TO SEW ON A BUTTON, SIMPLY HOLD THE THREAD BETWEEN YOUR THUMB AND A BLOCK OF THE WAX AND, HOLDING THE THREAD AGAINST THE WAX FIRMLY, PULL THE THREAD ACROSS IT SEVERAL TIMES.

THIS NOT ONLY MAKE THE THREAD EASIER TO STAY STRAIGHT ENOUGH TO THREAD THROUGH THE NEEDLE, IT ALSO MAKES IT SLIDE MORE SMOOTHLY THROUGH MOST FABRICS.

ALSO, IF YOU WILL COMBINE A STRAND OF DENTAL FLOSS WITH YOUR REGULAR THREAD WHEN YOU ARE SEWING ON A BUTTON, THEY WILL STAY ON LONGER.

USING THE KNOT USED TO TIE A FISH HOOK ALSO HELPS TO HOLD THE BUTTON ON BETTER.

31: TO HELP MAKE THE STITCHING ON SNEAKERS, BOOTS AND OTHER THREAD SEWN SHOES HOLD BETTER, TAKE A SMALL PIECE OF CANDLE WAX OR WHITE CRAYON, MELT IT AND PLACE IT OVER THE THREADS, MAKING SURE THAT THE WAX IS LIQUID ENOUGH TO SOAK INTO THE THREAD. WIPE AWAY EXCESS WITH OLD WASH RAG. THIS WATERPROOFS THE THREAD AND HELPS TO KEEP IT FROM ROTTING, THUS ADDING LIFE TO THE SHOES.

32: GOT AN IMPORTANT OCCASION AND YOUR BROWN OR BLACK DRESS SHOES HAVE SCUFFS OR SCRATCHES ON THEM, OR ARE A LITTLE DULL? SIMPLY RUB THE AFFECTED AREA FAIRLY HARD WITH A BROWN OR BLACK CRAYON, THEN BUFF WITH A PIECE OF OLD TERRY CLOTH WASH RAG TO A SHINE.

33: SCRATCHES ON YOUR FAVORITE PIECES OF FURNITURE? USE COMMON CRAYONS, RUBBED IN HARD, TO FILL THE SCRATCHES, THEN BUFF WITH SOFT RAG TILL SHINY.

34: WANT TO MAKE SOME CUTE LITTLE RAINBOW GIFT JARS FOR PENNIES? SIMPLY TAKE A TINY BIT OF OIL BASE ENAMEL, THIN IT JUST ENOUGH TO MAKE A TRANSPARENT GLAZE, THEN CAREFULLY USE A SOFT HAIR BRISTLED BRUSH TO BRUSH IT ON THE INSIDE OF THE JAR FOR NON-FOOD ITEMS, OR PAINT IT ON THE OUTSIDE FOR CONTAINERS MEANT TO HOLD FOOD.

IT WORKS BEST IF YOU USE A CHEMICAL GLASS ETCHING CREAM, THINNED WITH A LITTLE WATER TO WHERE YOU CAN SIMPLY SPONGE IT ON WITH A MAKEUP SPONGE, TO “BURR” THE GLASS FIRST.

YOU CAN ALSO USE THIS THINNED OIL BASE PAINT TO PAINT “STAINED GLASS” DESIGNS ON THE GLASS THAT GOES INSIDE A PICTURE FRAME, THEN PLACE LIGHTLY CRUMPLED FOIL BEHIND IT TO MAKE UNIQUE PICTURE FRAMES…OR A PICTURE ITSELF.

35: TO MAKE INEXPENSIVE LITTLE PAINT BRUSHES FOR THE KIDDO’S, SIMPLY TAKE SOME TRIANGULAR MAKEUP SPONGES, CUT A SMALL SLIT IN THE SQUARED END AND PLACE A POPSICLE STICK OR LARGE SUCKER STICK IN THE SLOT AND SEAL WITH A TOUCH OF HOT GLUE OR OTHER FORM OF WATER PROOF GLUE. ONCE THEY GET THROUGH WITH THE BRUSHES, YOU SIMPLY THROW THEM AWAY.

THESE LITTLE BRUSHES ARE IDEAL FOR WORKING WITH POSTERS AND BANNERS, AS THEY HOLD QUITE A BIT OF PAINT, IF IT IS A LITTLE THIN, AND YOU DO NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THE TOXIC FUMES FROM MARKERS. I USED TO USE THEM A LOT TO DO THE CALLIGRAPHIC LAYOUT FOR THE SMALLER LETTERS ON THE SIGNS I USED TO PAINT.

AND IF YOU DIP ONE CORNER IN ONE COLOR, AND THE SECOND CORNER IN ANOTHER COLOR, THEN RUN THEM BACK AND FORTH A FEW TIMES ON A PIECE OF SCRAP NEWSPAPER, IT WILL MAKE BLENDED STREAKS WHEN YOU PAINT.

36: FOR THOSE PARENTS WHO GO OUT NOW AND THEN AND HAVE YOUNG CHILDREN WHO PITCH FITS, TRY LETTING THEM PICK OUT A SMALL INEXPENSIVE LUNCH BOX, THEN FILL IT WITH LITTLE ITEMS LIKE SOME SMALL SNACKS, MAYBE SOME INEXPENSIVE TOY OR SOMETHING THAT THEY NORMALLY WOULDN’T GET ALL OF THE TIME, AND WHEN YOU GET READY TO LEAVE, TELL THEM THEY CANNOT OPEN THE KITS TILL AFTER YOU ARE GONE.

MY MOM USED TO DO THIS AND BELIEVE ME, EVEN THOUGH THE KITS NEVER CONTAINED ANYTHING THAT COST A LOT, WE GOT TO WHERE WE WERE PRACTICALLY SHOVING HER OUT THE DOOR SO THAT WE COULD GET OUR “TREASURE BOXES”!

37: FOR THOSE THAT WEAR COSTUME JEWELRY, LIKE EARRINGS, PENS, RINGS AND SUCH, AND SOME OF THE STONES COME OUT OR FOR SOME REASON A PART OF THE SET “GOES WALKABOUT”, DON’T THROW THEM AWAY.

SAVE THEM IN A LITTLE SHOE BOX OR PENCIL BOX, AND THEN YOU CAN USE THEM FOR CRAFT ITEMS.

ONE OF THE THINGS YOU CAN DO WITH PIERCED EARRINGS THAT ONE IS MISSING FROM THE SET IS TO CUT OFF THE POST AND THEN HOT GLUE THE REMAINDER TO BOWS THAT YOU MAKE WITH THOSE “MAKE YOUR OWN” HAIRCLIPS. SIMPLY COVER THE CLIP FIRST WITH YARN, RIBBONS OR FABRIC, ALL OF WHICH WILL BE HOT GLUED, THEN HOT GLUE THE STONES OR OTHER SMALL JEWELRY PIECES TO THE NEW CLIP.

YOU CAN ALSO GLUE THE PIERCED EARRINGS, ONCE YOU HAVE CLIPPED THE POST, INSIDE SMALLER SILK FLOWERS AND THEN GLUE THE FLOWERS TO THE CLIPS, OR TO A HAT.

38: FOR A UNIQUE LITTLE SACHET FOR YOUR KITCHEN, TAKE A SMALL ORANGE AND COMPLETELY COVER IT IN WHOLE CLOVES, THEN PUT A SMALL EYELET IN THE BOTTOM AND TOP AND WEAVE YARN THROUGH THE EYELETS TO FORM FOUR “SECTIONS”. TIE OFF THE YARN AND HANG FROM A CUP HOOK ATTACHED BENEATH A CUPBOARD EDGE.

39: TO GIVE YOUR HOME THAT “BAKING DAY” SMELL, SIMPLY ADD A FEW OF THE SPICES THAT YOU WOULD USE TO MAKE VARIOUS DESSERTS INTO A SMALL POT OF BOILING WATER.

DON’T ADD THE SPICES UNTIL THE VERY MOMENT THE WATER STARTS TO BOIL.

ONLY LET IT BOIL FOR ABOUT A MINUTE TO A MINUTE AND A HALF, THEN POUR THE MIXTURE INTO A SMALL POTPOURIE (HMMM, NEVER WAS SURE ON THE SPELLING ON THAT ONE, BUT OH WELL, I HOPE EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT I MEAN!) WARMER, AND LEAVE IT ALONE. YOU HOME WILL SMELL LIKE YOU HAVE BEEN SLAVING IN THE KITCHEN ALL DAY!

40: GOT THE SNIFFLES? A STOPPED UP HEAD? WELL, TRY PUTTING A FEW DROPS OF OIL OF PEPPERMINT OR OIL OF EUCALYPTUS, BOTH OF WHICH CAN BE FOUND IN A HEALTH FOOD OR DRUGSTORE, INTO SOME PRE-WARMED WATER IN ONE OF THOSE LITTLE SCENT WARMERS AND SET IT IN THE ROOM IN WHICH YOU SPEND MOST OF YOUR TIME, IT WORKS WONDERS.

YOU CAN ALSO TAKE A Q-TIP AND DIP INTO THE OIL OF EUCALYPTUS, RUN THE Q-TIP AROUND THE INSIDE EDGE OF THE BOTTLE TO SQUEEZE MOST OF IT OUT, THEN RUN IT ALONG BOTH EDGES OF YOUR PILLOW ABOUT THIRTY MINUTES BEFORE GOING TO BED. IT HELPS TO OPEN YOUR BREATHING PASSAGES WHEN YOU HAVE SINUS OR A COLD.

41: WANT TO DECORATE YOUR WINDOWS WITH LITTLE “SUNCATHER” TYPE STICKERS? THEY ARE VERY SIMPLE TO MAKE.

YOU WILL NEED SOME WHITE GLUE, LIKE ELMERS, SOME FOOD COLORING AND/OR TUBE WATER COLORS, SOME PAINT BRUSHES, A ROLL OF CLEAR SELF ADHESIVE SHELF PAPER, LIKE CONTACT PAPER, SCISSORS OR AN EXACTO KNIFE, SOME IMAGES YOU WOULD LIKE TO USE, AND EITHER A LIGHT BOX OR A WINDOW WITH THAT THE SUN SHINES STRONGLY THROUGH, AND SOME EASY RELEASE TAPE, AND A SMALL PAINT PALETTE THAT HAS THE LITTLE WELLS IN IT. YOU MIGHT ALSO WANT TO GET A BLACK CHINA MARKER.

TO MAKE AN INEXPENSIVE LIGHT BOX, SIMPLY FOLLOW THESE STEPS:

41-1: GET A BOX TALL ENOUGH THAT YOU CAN WORK AT IT COMFORTABLY WHEN SEATED IN A DINING ROOM CHAIR (MAKE SURE THE BOX IS STURDY ENOUGH TO SUPPORT YOUR PUTTING A LITTLE BIT OF PRESSURE ON IT WHILE TRACING THE DESIGNS WITHOUT FEAR OF THE BOX COLLAPSING OR WARPING);

41-2: CUT AT LEAST TWO SMALL SQUARES OUT NEAR THE TOP OF ALL FOUR SIDES OF THE BOX TO VENT THE HEAT FROM THE LAMP THAT WILL BE GOING INSIDE OF THE BOX;

41-3: TAKE ALUMINUM FOIL AND PLACE IT SHINY SIDE OUT AROUND THE ENTIRE UPPER ONE HALF OF THE BOX TO ACT AS A REFLECTOR, MAKING SURE TO RECUT THE VENTS. DUCT TAPE THE FOIL TO THE BOX;

41-4: CUT A SMALL SLOT ON ONE EDGE FOR THE CORD TO RUN THROUGH SO THAT THE BOX WILL SIT LEVEL;

41-5: PLACE A STANDING TABLE LAMP WITH A ONE HUNDRED WATT BULB ON THE FLOOR, THEN PLACE THE BOX OVER IT (MAKE SURE THE FLAPS ON BOTH THE TOP AND BOTTOM OF THE BOX ARE FOLDED DOWN AND HOT GLUED TO THE INSIDE TO ADD STRENGTH TO THE BOX);

41-6: PLACE A PIECE OF QUARTER INCH PLEXIGLASS OVER THE TOP OF THE BOX, MAKE SURE IT JUST FITS THE BOX AND THAT YOU DUCT TAPE IT AROUND THE EDGES TO KEEP IT FROM SHIFTING;

41-7: CHOOSE THE DESIGN OR IMAGE YOU WANT TO WORK ON.

41-8: ROLL OUT SOME OF THE CLEAR ADHESIVE VINYL :

41-9: LAY YOUR IMAGE CHOICE ON IT, THEN MARK AROUND THE EDGES:

41-10: CUT OUT THE VINYL, USING THE GUIDELINES THAT YOU JUST MADE;

41-11: TAPE THE DESIGN OR IMAGE TO THE WINDOW OR LIGHT BOX;

41-12: TAPE THE VINYL, VINYL SIDE UP (DO NOT REMOVE THE BACKING FROM THE VINYL!), TO THE PATTERN, BEING SURE TO MATCH EDGES;

41-13: COPY THE PATTERN, USING A BLACK PERMANENT MARKER;

41-14: BEGIN PAINTING THE DESIGN, USING SOFT HAIR BRISTLED BRUSHES, WITH THE GLUE AND WATER COLOR “PAINT” THAT HAS BEEN THINNED JUST ENOUGH TO LAY DOWN A THIN GLAZE OF COLOR, GOING ONE COLOR AT A TIME;

41-15: LET DRY IN BETWEEN COATS, TOUCH UP ANY SMALL AREAS THAT MIGHT NEED IT;

41-16: REPEAT LAST TWO STEPS TILL COLOR IS OF THE DENSITY YOU WISH, BUT KEEP IN MIND THAT LIGHT HAS TO BE ABLE TO COME THROUGH THE DESIGN.

41-17: ONCE THE DESIGN IS COMPLETE, LET DRY OVER NIGHT, THEN TRIM WITH EXACTO KNIFE, THEN PEEL OFF BACKING PAPER AND PUT YOUR NEW DESIGN ON THE WINDOW, BEING SURE TO WATCH FOR BUBBLE IN THE VINYL…

AND VOILA! YOU NOW HAVE A “SUNCATCHER”!

42: WANT TO ADD A RATHER UNIQUE “ICE BREAKER” (PARDON THE PUN!) TO YOUR NEXT PARTY?

TRY USING FLEXIBLE CANDY MOLDS TO MAKE THE ICE CUBES!

WELL, THAT IS ABOUT IT, FOLKS, BUT LIKE I SAID EARLIER, IF YOU LIKE THIS PAGE, THEN BOOKMARK IT AND CHECK BACK FROM TIME TO TIME TO SEE IF I HAVE ADDED ANYTHING NEW.

ALSO, IF ANY WHO READ THIS MIGHT HAVE TIPS THAT THEY WOULD LIKE TO SHARE, PUT THEM IN WITH YOUR COMMENTS, AND I WILL POST THEM AS A “GUEST TIP”, WITH THE PERSON’S NAME BEING ACCREDITED.

I HOPE THAT ANY WHO MIGHT READ THIS MIGHT FIND AT LEAST ONE OR TWO OF THESE THINGS HELPFUL OR INFORMATIVE.

BLESSINGS TO ALL,

  1. Wonderful tidbits of advice! Thanks for sharing. 😀

    • you are most welcome. i just hope that some of the other site members might stop by, as a lot of those tips have to do with kids, and in these days of rising costs and lowering pay, every little bit helps. i plan on posting more as i come across them or remember them. i have at least four craft books that tell how to make things from stuff around the house. once i dig through about eleven boxes of art stuff and find them, i will start sharing some of them.

      hope you are well.
